Mad Dogs and Hell Hounds

Dogs have always been associated with the Underworld, the Moon, and the deities, especially goddesses, of death and divination. There is still a folk belief that dogs willhowl when there is a death in the family to whom the dogs belong. A magician must take extreme care in what type of magickal dog he or she calls upon, as a great many of them are dangerous.

Dogs symbolize the dark side or forces of each human personality, which can rear its head from time to time in life. Since these forces are an integral part of the personality, there is no way we can completely eradicate them. However, we can, and should, learn how to keep them under conscious control.

The Black Dog

In Scotland and Ireland, the dreaded Black Dog has been seen over the centuries by many people. Due to the widespread emigration of Celtic peoples, the Black Dog has made appearances in many parts of the world. People of Celtic descent do not like to walk lonely roads without a companion, especially at night. Although the com- panion may never see this spectral creature, he or she does offer some protection from it.

This supernatural creature is almost always considered to be a dangerous omen, but in rare instances has been helpful to those who see it. Tradition says that if one speaks to or strikes at the Black Dog, the creature has the power to blast.64 This “blast” consists of first harming the person mentally, then causing a physical decline which may lead to death. Sometimes the Black Dog appears as an instrument of divine justice, stalking a guilty person until justiceis achieved in one form oranother.65

Tradition says that the best companion is a descendant of Ean MacEndroe of Loch Ewe. Clan history tells us that, in the year of Culloden, a Faery granted Ean MacEndroe and all his descendants protection from the power of the Black Dog. Ean found the Faery tangled in a bramble bush and released her. In gratitude, the Faery bestowed upon him this protection.

Descriptions of the Black Dog are often vague, basically because of the deep and lasting fear which it engenders. This ghostly creature’s appearance also fills the viewer with a chilly despair and despondency, followed by a decline in vitality. Some say the Black Dog is shaggy and as big as a calf, while others say it is no larger than a Labrador dog. All viewers, however, agree that it has huge fiery eyes and makes absolutely no sound: no panting, no clicking of toenails. If the watcher yells at the specter or makes any noise, the Black Dog pays no attention.

This frightening apparition does not generally attack or chase anyone. It just follows and projects its aura of deadly fear, which is enough to cause some viewers to become very ill afterward.
